Freedom of speech is denied when TDM was not even allowed to explain his writing

TDM says wasn’t given a chance to defend himself after backlash for controversial tweet on France, Muslims

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed today that he did not get a chance to explain himself following backlash against a controversial social media post he wrote yesterday.

The former prime minister said both Facebook and Twitter had requested for the administrator of his accounts to delete the posts, which he said were removed despite his team’s attempts to explain the context of the posts.

“There is nothing I can do with Facebook and Twitter’s decision to remove my posting,” Dr Mahathir wrote in a follow-up blog post.

“To my mind, since they are the purveyors of freedom of speech, they must at least allow me to explain and defend my position.”

Dr Mahathir said he was “disgusted” with attempts to misrepresent and take out of context his post, saying that the misrepresentations have since been used to allegedly stir up further hatred against Muslims.

“Even my appeal that the French should explain the need to advise their people to be sensitive and respect the beliefs of other people is left out.

“What is promoted by these reactions to my article is to stir French hatred for Muslims,” he wrote.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir was lambasted worldwide for at tweet saying “Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past.” had received thousands of replies and retweets worldwide, with many condemning it.

The remark was part of a paragraph where Dr Mahathir continued with: “But by and large the Muslims have not applied the ‘eye for an eye’ law. Muslims don’t. The French shouldn’t. Instead the French should teach their people to respect other people’s feelings.”

They were part of his blogpost yesterday suggesting that Muslims “have the right to punish” the French for their alleged wrongs committed against the community, amid escalating violence in France.

Dr Mahathir has since received condemnation from some world leaders, including embassies of Australia, the United States, and Germany in Malaysia.

Posted just a few hours after a knife attack outside Nice, France that killed three people and injured others, the former prime minister said Muslims also deserve to be angry and a boycott against the republic will not suffice.

Dr Mahathir’s post came as a knife-wielding attacker beheaded a woman and killed two other people in a suspected terrorist attack at a church in the French city of Nice yesterday.

The attack came while France was still reeling from the beheading earlier this month of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty by a man of Chechen origins.

Since Paty’s killing, French officials — backed by many ordinary citizens — have re-asserted the right to display the cartoons, and the images have been widely displayed at marches in solidarity with the killed teacher.

That has prompted an outpouring of anger in parts of the Muslim world, with some governments accusing French leader Emmanuel Macron of pursuing an anti-Islam agenda.

I hope and pray that TDM will be re-elected as PM for the 3rd time

Ep 16: Mahathir’s Last Fight

27 Aug 2020 10:00PM(Updated: 28 Aug 2020 09:48AM)

He has been dubbed a ‘Prime Minister Slayer’. Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has played a pivotal role in deposing multiple Prime Ministers, including some believe Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Will he be able to regain the trust of Malaysian voters to lead the country and become Prime Minister for the third time?

Officials must respect the Human Rights of refugees

Officials must be more ‘civilised’, says ex-refugee

Imran Ariff -October 26, 2020

Hassan al-Kontar in 2018 when he was stuck at the klia2 terminal, and in July this year, enjoying his freedom in Canada.

“They jailed a 12-year old Rohingya boy with me in the detention centre. A kid,” he said. “There were women with babies three or four months old in the women’s cells. That’s not acceptable, by any standard.”

PETALING JAYA: A Syrian refugee who spent seven months stranded at the klia2 terminal in 2018 has spoken out about the need for reforms in Malaysia’s immigration detention centres.

Hassan al-Kontar said Malaysia’s refugee policy lags far behind that of most developed countries, and many Malaysians were “very misinformed” about what goes on at detention centres.

“The immigration officers and police in the detention centre should be civilised. They should care about human rights,” he told FMT.

Hassan said Malaysia had a long way to go in handling refugees and asylum seekers.

However, despite his nine-month ordeal in Malaysia, he insists he still harbours some fondness for the country.

For nearly seven months in 2018, Hassan lived at klia2’s arrival hall. He survived off donated airline meals, showered in bathrooms for the disabled, and slept beneath stairwells.

He was stuck at the airport in limbo, unable to return to his war-torn homeland of Syria, and without the papers to enter Malaysia.

His story captured the world’s attention and shone a spotlight on a refugee crisis that remains unresolved.

Hassan later moved to Canada, after being sponsored by a group of Canadians, whom he calls his “avenger team”, and secured permanent residence there.

A former insurance agent, he now sets his sights on helping other refugees achieve the same freedom he now enjoys.

“I was not an activist before I went to Malaysia,” Hassan said, “but what happened to me, and the experience I had at the airport changed me somehow.

“I became somebody who isn’t intimidated by bullies like immigration or the system.”

Despite the “hate” and “hostility” he experienced at the hands of the authorities, Hassan said that “it made me who I am today, and for that I’m thankful”.

He is now working with Operation #NotForgotten, a fundraising effort aiming to sponsor hundreds of refugees detained on Manus Island and Nauru, so that, like him, they too can find a home in Canada.

Thus far, they have submitted more than 60 applications and raised over C$1.5 million (RM4.73 million).

He is also a volunteer with the British Columbia Muslim Association and the Red Cross, and is on the path to becoming a full Canadian citizen.

“Thank God I’m in a country that values human beings, their dignity and rights. I’ll be safe forever, and that’s a priceless feeling. I am free, I have a voice and I have value, and that’s everything I was fighting for,” he said.2.4kSharesfacebook sharing button 2.1ktwitter sharing button 192

Wild, wild West of Malaysia’s political turmoil

Wild, wild West of Malaysia’s political turmoil

Sunday, 18 Oct 2020 06:52 AM MYT

BY WONG SAI WAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

COMMENTARY, Oct 18 — If this were a cowboy movie, we could say that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s band of wagons have formed a circle as the outlaws have them surrounded.

Unfortunately for Muhyiddin, not only are his enemies “shooting” at him from the outside, he is also getting friendly fire from within his circle of wagons.

On the onset, it looks dire for the eighth prime minister at the moment as it seems he is outgunned.

However, that may not be the case because not only are his attackers not very good with their aim but all of them want the goodies in the wagons for themselves.

At present, there seem to be four groups of attackers; one led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, another by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by Umno while the last is the one led by Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

This is where this cowboy movie plot gets complicated. While they are all attacking Muhyiddin’s wagon, they are not doing it as a team. As they all shoot at the prime minister, they are also shooting at each other and in a way they are helping Muhyiddin.

As far as I can make out, this is how the gangs are divided and what their real objectives are.

Mahathir and gang

He wants to get rid of Muhyiddin and until recently wanted to come back as PM No. 9 especially when Anwar seems so close to doing so.

He is now said to be backing Tengku Razaleigh for the post because that’s the only way he can prevent his ultimate nemesis (Anwar) from becoming prime minister and also remove the present one.

The 95-year-old has openly attacked Anwar and used even “bigger guns” against him than Muhyiddin.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah

The only one who has not rounded up a gang to join his attack and who has not openly said he wants to be the next PM although it has been widely speculated that he has gone to see the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to offer himself as the alternative prime minister candidate without the country having to go through a general election.

He did the same thing — going to see the King — when Dr Mahathir resigned in February.

It is also speculated that he has the support of some of the Umno warlords although none have come forward to say so.

Anwar Ibrahim

He announced on September 23 that he had obtained the support of the majority of the members of Parliament and it was his announcement that created this rush for Muhyiddin’s job.

However, he doesn’t seem to be able to name the MPs who have switched to his side. For that matter his supposed allies in Amanah and DAP have not come out to support him as enthusiastically as expected.

It is as if they do not believe or do not like the deals he has been making to get their support.

Anwar is supposed to have received a letter from the Umno leadership that says they now support him and the DAP is uncomfortable about this as Umno is their lifelong enemy.

They are afraid that the deal Anwar made includes giving the likes of Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Najib Razak a “get out of jail” card from the corruption charges they are facing.

After all, their huge success in the 2018 general election was due to their anti-corruption campaign.

It seems DAP is split in two — one group willing to do anything to get back into government and the other insisting that they cannot accept any deal with Umno.

Umno

They are the ones who are now providing the friendly fire at Muhyiddin. They were allies until the Sabah state elections in which Umno as a whole felt that Muhyiddin had “bullied” them by denying them the chief minister’s post and did not show them the “respect” they deserved as the party with the most seats in the state government.

When Muhyiddin formed his Cabinet, many in Umno expected to be given the deputy prime minister’s post but instead Muhyiddin did away with that position.

It is widely accepted that he did not accept many of the names recommended by Zahid but instead chose other Umno MPs to be ministers and deputy ministers.

This move left out many of the senior Umno MPs collectively known as the party’s “warlords”.

As a party, they want Muhyiddin to accord them the “respect” it deserves and to appoint party leaders to “suitable” posts. According to party secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Mazlan, their demands have already been made known to Muhyiddin.

What are their demands? This is where the Umno story gets even more complicated. The party is split into at least four factions:

* Zahid’s gang: Said to want their candidate to be made deputy prime minister and the political prosecution to be stopped.

* Najib’s gang: Said to want the same things as Zahid’s but differ in the choice of the DPM candidate.

* Warlords: They want one of them to be made the DPM and to replace four of the present Umno ministers with those from among their ranks.

* Tengku Razaleigh’s gang: Made up of those not associated with the three other factions. Officially Ku Li, as he is popularly known, is not in the plans of the other three and would not see his appointment as being that of “respect” to Umno.

Meanwhile, there are various speculations as to how Muhyiddin will handle this friendly fire.

One consensus is that Umno will get the DPM’s post in a major Cabinet reshuffle. Senior Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yackob and deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Hassan are touted to be the front runners for the post.

One or two of the present ministers would also be dropped and be replaced by some of the warlords.

Gangs

If Umno, as a united party, gets what it wants then the guns will be turned at Anwar, Dr Mahathir and even Tengku Razaleigh in support of Muhyiddin — at least until the end of the present Parliamentary term which is due to expire in 2023.

But the present cowboy movie situation only demonstrates the fragility of Muhyiddin’s government as all it takes is just two MPs from his side to cross over to collapse it.

He has told many people privately that he wants a general election to end the current impasse but the Covid-19 pandemic would make that impossible.

However, if push comes to shove, Muhyiddin will definitely not hesitate to go and see the King to ask that Parliament be dissolved so that fresh elections can be held.

But will it resolve this cowboy situation? Not likely, as no party will win big enough to form a government and we will be back once again to the encircled band of wagons.

Unique Muslim city in ancient Russia

Unique Muslim city in ancient Russia

ONE of the earliest Muslim areas on the territory of Russia was Volzhskaya Bulgaria, or “Bulgaria on the banks of the Volga river” — not referring or related to Bulgaria in Eastern Europe.

Volzhskaya Bulgaria is now a part of autonomous Republic of Tatarstan. It was an independent state before.

The country emerged at the end of the ninth or early 10th century, and quite for a long time was the only developed nation on the eastern tip of Europe. The population originally came from around the Azov Sea and conquered the local Finno-Uigur and Turkic tribes.

Among the biggest cities were Bulgar and Bilyar. The population even outnumbered those in London, Paris, Kiev (then the capital of ancient Russia) and Novgorod (a prosperous city in Russia).

Volzhskaya Bulgaria had trade relations with Central Asia, China, Byzantium and Russia, mainly involving wheat, fur, timber, leather, footwear, weapons, etc.

Each year, there were trade fairs in which merchants from Baghdad, Damascus, Scandinavia and even Spain took part. Many foreign trade missions had its own premises in the capital of Volzhskaya Bulgaria.

Buildings in the capital city of Bulgar in the 10th to 14th century were of stone and brick. Windows were covered with glass. The floor of the buildings was heated from below using a special heating system.

There was a water pipe system in the city. Until now, we can see the ruins of the “Black House” consisting of a minaret, mausoleum, the tomb of Khan the invader and a mosque. In the year 922, a delegation from Baghdad visited Volzhskaya Bulgaria.

During a meeting, all local tribes decided to accept Islam as the official religion. The ruler, Almaz, has chosen the Muslim name of Jafar ibn Abdallah. This was noted by Ibn Fadlan, the secretary of the mission from Baghdad sent by Caliph Al-Muktadir.

The name of Jafar ibn Abdallah can be seen on the silver coins of that country. According to a local tale, there are tombs of two Sahab—Muslims who lived during Prophet Muhammad’s time, in Bulgar.

With the acceptance of Islam, Volzhskaya Bulgaria became stronger as it could rely on the support of other Muslim countries. It helps that it signed peace and trade agreements, too, with powerful neighbour Russia.

The acceptance of Islam also led to cultural development. The old Turkic writing was replaced by Jawi. In 1928, with the creation of autonomous Tatar Republic, Jawi was replaced by Roman script, and later by Cyrilic in 1938.

Since the beginning of the 10th century, in many places in Volzhskaya Bulgaria, there were already schools apart from scientists and writers (poets).

In the first half of the 12th century, the scholar Yakob ibn Nogman wrote a book about history of Volzhskaya Bulgaria.

Another scholar, Burhan ibn Bulgari, wrote a book about rhetoric art and medicine. Syair Yusof, written by Kul Gali (13th century), became popular far beyond Volzhskaya Bulgaria at that time, and had greatly influenced the development of local Tartar literature.

The people of Volzhskaya Bulgaria were skilful jewellers and craftsmen, who made gold, silver, bronze, copper and porcelain plates with intricate carvings, jewellery from metal, copper locks in the form of animals, leather goods, and clothes sewn with beads and silver thread. Some heritage objects had been preserved thanks to the interest in culture of Peter the Great.

In 1722, during his trip near the Volga, Peter stopped at the ruins ofBulgar and ordered the inscriptions on more than 50 gravestones to be copied. Two experts were assigned for that. They also recorded the local folklore. In 1223, Volzhskaya Bulgaria was invaded by Tatar-Mongol troops led by Subudai Khan, who is believed to have never lost a battle.

He quickly crossed the whole of Asia while destroying the Russian army on the river Kalka. But, for the first time, he was defeated at the hands of Volzhskaya Bulgarian soldiers. He lost many of his soldiers and much of his loot in previous battles. With great difficulty, he managed to escape with a small group of soldiers and return home, before coming back 13 years later and finally conquering Volzhskaya Bulgaria.

For some reason, the Tatar Mongol forces couldn’t stay long, and Volzhskaya Bulgaria managed to restore its power. The situation lasted until 1236, when Batu Khan invaded and destroyed Bulgar and its surrounding towns.

Many fled to Russian territory. Nevertheless, Volzhskaya Bulgaria continued the struggle for freedom. In subsequent years, the residents rebuilt palaces, mosques, churches and tombs.

Trade was again restored. But in 1361, Bulgar was again invaded, this time by Khan Bulat T imur, who burnt it to the ground.

After it was rebuilt, the next military invasion of Tamerlane saw Bulgar completely destroyed again. In the early 15th century, the Kazan Khanate emerged from the former Volzhskaya Bulgaria.

Later in 1552, Russian Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) conquered Kazan city and included this region into Russia. Since then, Volzhskaya Bulgaria has remained a part of Russia known as Tatarstan.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 ― Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today accused those in power now of abusing laws and parliamentary regulations to impede the democratic process.

In a brief Facebook post, the Langkawi MP said laws and regulations are needed to ensure that matters are smoothly managed and goals are achieved.

However, he claimed they were being deliberately misinterpreted to prevent fair debate in Parliament.

“This is what’s happening in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The Dewan Rakyat which convenes for friends and foes to debate has become an obstacle to freedom of speech and debate,” he wrote, without providing specifics.

However, Dr Mahathir’s post comes after Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun issued a statement on attempts back in May by several MPs to table a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Parliament.

In the statement, Azhar drew comparisons between Malaysia’s parliamentary system to Australia’s and said a motion of no-confidence would not be expedited unless it is taken up by a minister.

He said all proposed motions would be treated according to the Dewan Rakyat’s Standing Orders and the existing laws.

Last Wednesday, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he wanted a guarantee that a no-confidence motion could be tabled against the prime minister in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting, following the failure of the Speaker to do so in the past sitting.

In the September 25 dated letter sighted by Malay Mail, Tengku Razaleigh asked Azhar why the no-confidence motion was not debated in the Dewan Rakyat during the previous Parliament sessions between July 13 until August 27.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has called for tougher action against Malaysians who traffic in illegal migrants, a group which has been blamed for spreading Covid-19, following the recent surge in cases.

He said penalties should include imprisonment for traffickers and people in cahoots with them under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act or Sosma.

“Without the help of these traitors, it would be more difficult for undocumented migrants to enter the country. What is stopping the government from issuing a stern warning to foreigners that we will impose tougher penalties starting from today?” he said on Facebook.

Najib also wondered what was stopping the government from rewarding citizens residing in “hotspots” for information that led to the crippling of trafficking syndicates.

He noted that the mutated Covid-19 virus was from two undocumented migrants in a lock-up in Lahad Datu which affected Sabah and subsequently led to the entire state being placed under the conditional movement control order.

He said from January until Oct 13, a total of 12,877 migrants had been nabbed in Sabah alone. And despite being under CMCO, 60 more migrants and six smugglers were nabbed a few days ago, Najib said.

He said the number of migrants nabbed every day were in a double-digit figures, while the Covid-19 cases in Sabah were also increasing, with 439 infections alone reported today.

Najib said he had given warnings about the danger since April as he had predicted that it would be among the reasons for an increase in Covid-19 infections.

“When will the National Security Council consider this?” he said.

He said it was time Putrajaya looked after Malaysians and reduced encroachment by those who could be carrying the virus.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the recent surge in Covid-19 cases originated from migrants coming into Sabah.
